Mike's Tips: Making the most of your sketchbook

Get in the habit of carrying a pocket-sized sketchbook, a soft pencil and a camera. Subjects always happen when you least expect them.

Don't let the format of a future painting be decided by the format of your sketchbook - start thinking about the shape most suitable or interesting for the subject by doing a few thumbnail studies in differently shaped drawn borders.
